This 1970s multiple, titled "Rainbow Banner," is an authentic color screenprint executed directly onto a heavy, woven textile canvas. Otto Piene (1928–2014) was a prominent figure of the post-war European avant-garde and a co-founder of the influential German ZERO Movement. Alongside Heinz Mack and Günther Uecker, Piene sought to reset art history to a "zero point" by abandoning traditional paint in favor of pure light, smoke, and environmental space. He later served as the director of the Center for Advanced Visual Studies (CAVS) at MIT. Today, his pioneering works are held in premier permanent collections worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York and the Tate Modern in London.
